Public Notary Services

Flossmoor Public Library Notary Service Procedures

The Flossmoor Public Library offers free notary services in accordance with Illinois law and subject to the below restrictions:

  • Notary service is offered only to Flossmoor residents who bring current photo identification with a Flossmoor address
  • The library cannot guarantee notary service will be available at all times. Patrons seeking notary service should call the Adult Services Department to schedule an appointment.
  • No notary service will be scheduled during the first 30 minutes or final 45 minutes of the day.
  • The library will not provide witnesses and witnesses may not be solicited from patrons. In order to serve as a witness, the witness must know the person whose document is being notarized, must be in possession of valid photo identification, and be present at the time of the notarization.
  • A notary cannot certify copies of documents or signatures. All documents must be originals.
  • Notary service is not available for real estate, mortgages, deeds, immigration documents, or notary records which require legal knowledge.
  • Illinois law requires that a notary and the patron seeking notarization be able to communicate directly with each other. The library notary is not permitted to make use of a translator.
  • The library notary may, at their sole discretion, decline to provide notary service. Notaries will not provide service if the customer, document, or other circumstances raise any issue of authenticity, ambiguity, or doubt.
  • Documents must be completely filled in (except for signatures) prior to arriving at a notary appointment. Forms with any blank spaces will not be notarized.
  • Documents must be signed in the presence of the notary.
  • Flossmoor Public Library notaries are not attorneys licensed to practice law in Illinois. They are not allowed to draft legal documents or records, nor may they give advice on any matter.
