FREE ACCESS TO INFORMATION

To help assure equitable access to information, the Flossmoor Public Library offers public access to the Internet. The Library is dedicated to protecting and promoting intellectual freedom and it will not control or monitor information in electronic format.

The Internet is a global collection of computer networks created by a highly diverse population. The Flossmoor Public Library urges Internet users to be informed consumers and to carefully evaluate information obtained via the Internet. Although it is a positive tool which provides access to a high volume of valuable information, the Internet also contains sources which may provide inaccurate, incomplete, and out-of-date information. In addition, the Internet contains sexually explicit material and other information which may be controversial, inappropriate, or offensive. The Flossmoor Library does not assume any responsibility for information located on the Internet. Those who use the Library's Internet workstation will do so at their own discretion.

TERMS OF USE
  • Patrons must sign in for each Internet use.
  • Reservations will be taken, up to one week in advance. Users may reserve a maximum of one session per day. A maximum of 60 minutes per user session is allowed. If no one is waiting, the user may continue using the Internet until another user is waiting.
  • With the exception of a parent or guardian accompanying a child, there is only one user per session.
  • Library staff members do not serve in loco parentis. Only parents or legal guardians are responsible for their children. Parents are encouraged to work closely with their children to select Internet files which are consistent with their family's values and boundaries.
  • Written permission from a parent or legal guardian is required for all Internet users under 16 years old.
  • A parent or responsible adult must accompany all Internet users who are under the sixth grade level.
  • Users must possess basic computer skills in order to use the Internet. Library staff will provide basic assistance as their time and knowledge allows; however, staff members cannot provide personal instruction.

ACCEPTABLE USE

Flossmoor Public Library requires that library patrons using the Internet do so within the guidelines of acceptable use. The following activities are unacceptable and may result in a cancellation of privileges:

  • Behaving in a manner that is disruptive or which could result in the harassment of others. This includes, but is not limited to, the display of offensive material.
  • Use of the Internet in any way which violates a Federal or State law
  • Unauthorized duplication of copyright-protected software or violation of software license agreements
  • Destruction of, damage to, or unauthorized alteration of the library's computer equipment, software, or network security procedures
  • Violation of system security
